The Department of Clinical Microbiology, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD Studentship in Fungal Infections under the supervision of Prof. Johannes Wagener.
The research focuses on Aspergillus fumigatus, an important fungal pathogen responsible for allergic asthma, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, and invasive aspergillosis. The project combines basic and translational research to investigate fungal cell biology, antifungal mechanisms of action, antifungal resistance, host–pathogen interactions, and immune evasion.
The selected candidate will receive a stipend and full academic fee coverage while working in a collaborative research environment with opportunities to present research at national and international conferences and publish scientific findings.
Eligibility
Applicants should have:
- A First Class or 2:1 Bachelor’s degree or a Master’s degree in:
- Microbiology
- Biology
- Biochemistry
- Molecular Medicine
- Immunology
- Or another related discipline.
- A strong interest in:
- Microbiology
- Infection biology
- Molecular biology and genetics
- Immunology
- Antimicrobial research.
Desirable experience
- PCR and molecular cloning.
- Protein biochemistry.
- Cell culture (fungal, bacterial, or mammalian).
- Fluorescence/confocal microscopy.
- Immunology techniques.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
