Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has recorded an unprecedented rise in its doctoral output, marking a significant milestone in India’s higher education and research ecosystem.

Over the past few years, the institute has awarded nearly as many PhD degrees as it did in the previous three decades combined—highlighting a strong and sustained expansion in research capacity.

A Sharp Rise in Doctoral Degrees

Between 2020 and 2025, IIT Delhi awarded 2,259 PhD degrees, a figure that almost matches the 2,281 PhDs awarded between 1966 and 1999. This rapid growth reflects a major shift in the scale and intensity of doctoral research at the institute.

In total, 5,765 PhDs were awarded between 2000 and 2025, more than double the number conferred in the entire pre-2000 period.

Decade-Wise Growth Highlights

  • 1966–1999: 2,281 PhDs

  • 2000–2009: 1,130 PhDs

  • 2010–2019: 2,376 PhDs (strongest full decade)

  • 2020–2025: 2,259 PhDs in just six years

This data shows that over 70% of all PhDs at IIT Delhi have been awarded after the year 2000, with growth accelerating further after 2010.

What’s Driving This Growth?

Experts attribute this research boom to:

  • Sustained investment in research infrastructure

  • Expansion of doctoral programs
