Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, and early detection remains a major challenge. Traditional tissue biopsies are effective but invasive and provide only a snapshot of a tumor.
Liquid biopsy is a minimally invasive approach that analyzes blood or other body fluids for cancer-related biomarkers, including circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), circulating tumor cells (CTCs), cell-free DNA (cfDNA), RNA, exosomes, and proteins.
Because liquid biopsies require only a blood sample, they can be performed repeatedly, making them useful for monitoring tumor changes, treatment response, drug resistance, and recurrence.
Why Are Liquid Biopsies Important?
Liquid biopsies have the potential to:
- Detect certain cancers at earlier stages.
- Monitor tumor progression in real time.
- Identify mutations that can guide targeted treatment.
- Assess treatment effectiveness.
- Detect minimal residual disease and possible recurrence.
- Provide a less invasive alternative for repeated monitoring.
Can They Detect Cancer Earlier?
Researchers are investigating whether liquid biopsies can detect cancer before symptoms appear or tumors become visible through imaging. Some studies suggest that cancer-associated biomarkers may be detectable months before conventional diagnosis.
However, early-stage detection remains challenging because small tumors may release very little DNA or other biomarkers into the bloodstream. Improving test sensitivity and specificity remains an important area of research.
