About

The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship 2027 is a fully funded international research opportunity offered by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). The fellowship enables outstanding pre-doctoral and postdoctoral researchers from ASEAN member countries and eligible researchers associated with ASEAN institutions to conduct collaborative research at Japanese universities and research institutions.

The fellowship supports research across all academic disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, engineering, natural sciences, medical sciences, and related fields.

Benefits include:

  • Round-trip economy airfare
  • Monthly allowance:
    • 362,000 JPY for Ph.D. holders
    • 200,000 JPY for researchers who have not yet obtained a Ph.D.
  • Settling-in allowance of 200,000 JPY (for fellowships of three months or longer)
  • Overseas travel insurance
  • Research support allowance of up to 70,000 JPY per month for cooperative research expenses

Duration: 1–12 months (as agreed with the Japanese host researcher).

Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy one of the following:

  • Ph.D. holders from ASEAN member countries who obtained their Ph.D. outside Japan within the last six years.
  • Doctoral students from ASEAN member countries expected to obtain their Ph.D. within two years (outside Japan).
  • Non-ASEAN nationals who obtained a Ph.D. outside Japan within the last six years and have conducted research at an ASEAN institution for at least three consecutive years.
  • Non-ASEAN doctoral students expected to obtain a Ph.D. within two years and who have conducted research at an ASEAN institution for at least three consecutive years.

Applicants are not eligible if they:

  • Have previously been awarded and commenced a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan.
  • Are Japanese citizens who are permanent residents of eligible countries.

Researchers who have taken maternity or parental leave may receive consideration regarding the eligibility period.

How to apply

  1. Secure a Japanese host researcher willing to supervise your research.
  2. Prepare the required application documents, including:
    • Application form
    • Academic transcripts
    • Ph.D. certificate (or expected completion proof)
    • Recommendation letter
    • Letter of acceptance from the Japanese host
    • Research plan
    • Publication list (if applicable)
  3. Submit the application through the ASEAN University Network (AUN) application portal.
